‘Last weekend saw the 16th playing of the annual ‘South Cliff Classic’.
Members and visitors were greeted with an immaculately presented course but testing weather conditions made for tough scoring.
Setting the early pace on Saturday was Mick Ellis, his nett 71 looked like giving him the overnight lead until an excellent nett 68 from Andy Noble and a nett 70 from Carl Baldwin saw them taking the top 2 positions into Sunday’s round
With 30 players within 5 shots of the leaders, there was potential for a player in the chasing pack to post a low score and put pressure on the last groups.
That player was Pete Morton, a superb nett 66 to go with his nett 75 from Saturday gave him a 2 round total of 3 under par, 143.
With just 1 group to finish it looked like Pete was going to hang on for the title, however Andy and Carl were both playing well and stood on the 17th tee Carl was 5 under and Andy 4 under for the tournament.
A nett birdie on the 17th from Andy and a nett par from Carl saw them level on 5 under playing the 18th hole, with Andy on a shot the pressure was on Carl to make a gross birdie, however 3 steady shots into the heart of the green and 2 solid putts were enough for Andy to make a nett birdie, finish on 6 under par and take the title. Carl’s bogey saw him finish as runner up on 4 under par.
The ‘Plate’ competition which runs alongside the Classic was won by Paul Miller with an excellent nett 63, the gross prize was won By Sean Burrows with a 2 round total of 155.
There was also a separate competition for higher handicap players, this was won by Phil Reeve with a 2 round total of 148.
GT Garages in Scarborough had provided a £15k car for any player making a hole in 1 on Sunday’s round, sadly no one managed the feat although there were some near miss stories!’
